When Are You Coming Back?

March 19, 2015

Yes, that is what we hear from our women’s groups.  “When are you coming back again!”  We recently began a new mothers and toddler’s Bible study and the women have told us how much they really love the study. This new Christian Bible study has been made possible by a grant from the Lorenz Family Foundation and we are very grateful to have received the grant so that we can bring a Bible study to mothers and their little children.

Bible Study in Guatemala

The women in these groups almost exclusively speak the Mayan language of Kakchiquel so our Bible study presenters must also translate from Spanish into Kakchiquel.  Each group gathers together once a month for a Bible study and fun for the little toddlers.  They have told Araceli, our Guatemalan Program Coordinator, that they are so grateful to have the opportunity to learn about Jesus.  Because they do not have a church close to them, they rarely get to hear God’s Word and learn about His son, Jesus Christ. Of course sometimes the older children are not in school that day and they also come with mama to the Bible study!

Araceli and our presenters reported that the little toddlers had a lot of fun too. The Bible study involves a tomato worm and they all learn about the “Fruit of the Spirit.” There is a lot of interaction among the presenters and the toddlers with puppets, games, crafts and real fruit to emphasize the lesson.

Learning about Jesus!

Let the little children come!

February 2, 2015

We love it when we have lots of little ones for Vacation Bible School!  The little children are so precious and we have so much fun with them in VBS!

You really should go on one of our Mission Trips to Guatemala as we show God’s love and teach them about His son, Jesus Christ.  The little children love it when we come to their village for VBS and are always so excited and eager to learn. Of course the love the games, the snacks and craft time too!!

Dynamic Little Lady!

June 27, 2014

I would like to introduce you to one of our artisans who is really a little dynamo!  She is a very tiny little lady but is filled with energy and determination.  Vicenta and her husband live in the rural highlands with their 7 children and nearby are many extended family members.

She is a master weaver on the backstrap loom and floor looms — called a foot pedal loom by the artisans — and she has taught her daughters to weave on both looms too.

Vicenta’s family and her whole community are Kakchiquel Mayans and very typical of the wonderfully warm and friendly people we meet in the western highlands of Guatemala.  Many of these rural families don’t understand the importance of education, however, Vicenta and her husband are different in that they are adamant about their children attending school. Thanks to a sponsor in our Education Program their oldest daughter, Laura,  is able to go on to career school to become a bilingual secretary.  It is very difficult for families to afford schooling after grade school and junior high school so we are very appreciative of all our sponsors and the help it brings to the families!

On our recent trip to Guatemala Victor and Vicenta’s home was one of the homes that our mission team repaired with the help of our local friends, Joe and Carlos.  Her kitchen was an adobe structure with a low ceiling, earthquake damage and a stove that did not vent so all the smoke stayed in the kitchen.  Victor and Vicenta decided to remove the old structure and had sufficient money to build new walls and the mission team did the floor, roof, new stove and new electrical wiring.

The family is so happy with their new kitchen. We are really happy to see the progress this family has made through the years because of their hard work and  determination along with the Fair Trade wages they receive from Education And More  for all the products they make.

If you are interested in traveling to Guatemala on a mission trip to help repair homes or teach VBS be sure to check our website for new 2015 tours that will be listed soon.  We will be working in this village next year and helping several more of the artisan families by repairing their homes.

Some of the handcrafts that Vicenta and her group have made are shown here. See all of our Fair Trade handcrafts in our webstore and in our Etsy store.

A Big Blessing!

September 26, 2013

“Education And More is a big blessing for our family,” Santos tells us. “You help us sell our handcrafts so we can care for our family and you also find wonderful people to help us educate our children. May God bless you all!”

Santos is the mother of 4 children, one of whom has a sponsor in our sponsorship program.  This family has great needs but is very appreciative  of the help they receive.

Little Jennifer is such a shy girl and doesn’t talk much but that is partly due to the fact she speaks Kakchiquel and is just learning Spanish in school.  With a sponsor she  will be able to stay in school and look forward to a brighter future.  Her mother is so happy!

Mission Trip to Guatemala in October!

May 17, 2013

We are really excited to tell you about our October trip — a trip to really make a difference in the lives of school children and teachers!  Take your choice of what you would like to do while on this trip– help with repairs and building or teach Vacation Bible School.

DSC00770

We will be working at a small school in the western highlands of Guatemala.  This remote little school is situated high on a volcanic mountain and contains only 3 classrooms and 3 teachers. Because of limited resources they need our help with repairs and with a building project at the school and have also invited us to present VBS to the children at the school.

You will have time to:

  • your choice of work projects — building/repairs or teaching Vacation Bible School
  • meet the artisans we work with and visit their communities and homes
  • maybe see how they make those delicious tortillas by hand
  • learn a little of a Mayan language – T”zutujil, Kakchiquel or K’iche
  • visit other villages in the rural highlands  and see beautiful Lake Atitlan
  • see the colonial city of Antigua
  • share God’s love while helping our neighbors in Guatemala
  • maybe teach a little English in our spare time at the school
  • view weaving demonstrations on a backstrap loom and foot pedal loom
We will be building a new kitchen stove for the school!

Sharing The Gospel

January 22, 2013

Our January trip was special because we presented Vacation Bible School in Guatemala!  Our artisans had all invited us to bring VBS to them and their children and in January we had the first sessions.  The children just loved all the activity of VBS – Bible stories, crafts, games, songs and of course the refreshments.  Most if not all of the children and mothers have never attended VBS before so it was a new experience to them!

Even the tiniest had fun at VBS!

Even the tiniest had fun at VBS!

We presented a special Bible Study hour to the mothers of the children through the Magdalena film from the Jesus Film Project.  After the film we presented a short study on Psalms 66 and what God has done in our lives, then we let them listen to the Bible in their own language on a Proclaimer from Faith Comes By Hearing.  A Proclaimer is a simple black box that has the Bible downloaded into it in the native language of the listener and in this case it was in Kakchiquel.  The women (and children too!) have never had the Bible in their own language.

DSC02483

The Proclaimer is a unique tool to share the Gospel because it is very simple to use, it can be recharged by solar, wind-up or by electricity, and the volume can be turned up so that approximately 300 people can hear the Word.  We left the Proclaimer with one of our groups to use until we return in a few months and then will let another group use it. We would like to purchase one for each of our groups and are looking for donations. The cost is $100 each so if you would like to help share the Word please donate today!
